IDD Therapy

IDD therapy is a non invasive, targeted disc treatment used to combat slipped, herniated, bulging or prolapsed discs. These conditions often need more than the conventional treatment offered by osteopathy that consist of soft tissue massage, stretching movements, high velocity thrust technique and gentle release techniques.

IDD therapy offers a different approach and is an alternative treatment that can be used in place of steroid injections and surgery, both of which can result in some unwanted side effects.

What does IDD therapy do?

Short for Intervertebral Differential Dynamics, IDD therapy uses an Accu-SPINA machine to target specific segments of the spine. Pressure is relieved from the nerves and spinal discs by gently stretching tight muscles and stiff ligaments. This decompresses injured or bulging discs, triggering the body’s natural healing mechanisms allowing it to function more efficiently. Water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids are then encouraged to move into the discs allowing them to heal. Through the use of IDD therapy’s decompression technique and the pressure being relieved from the injured intervertebral discs, patient’s are able to regain mobility and are freed from the pain caused by muscle spasms.

Relieve pain and muscle tension

Improve posture and joint flexibility

Promote circulation and faster recovery

Prevent future injuries and recurrence of pain

How many sessions are needed?

The amount of sessions required of IDD treatment varies from patient to patient. To give an accurate answer we would need to assess the patient’s condition during a complimentary consultation. Before we can begin treatment, we require an MRI scan to be sent to us, this gives us a clear presentation of what the patient is experiencing and allows us to put together a suitable plan of action. If you don’t already have MRI scans, we can refer you to have them done.

Enfield Osteopathic Clinic is part of the UK and international network of IDD Therapy Disc Clinics, we are highly qualified practitioners and are passionate about transforming our patient’s physical conditions so they are able to return to a pain-free life that can be enjoyed

Clinical Director John Yeboah

“As an experienced Osteopath, I see a lot of complex back pain issues including an increasing number of spinal disc problems.  IDD Therapy completes the non-invasive treatment offering we can give our patients when they need something more for their pain.

If someone is suffering with a disc issue or chronic low back pain which does not require immediate surgical intervention, then IDD Therapy offers solution opportunities which simply did not exist before.”

We look forward to seeing you.

*Note: As with all treatments results vary depending on the nature of your condition and IDD Therapy treatment is one treatment tool we use. As part of your assessment we will advise you on the most applicable treatment for your individual needs and as appropriate we do occasionally refer patients to local consultants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, IDD Therapy is safe, very gentle and patients feel relaxed during treatment; they wear ergonomic harnesses to support their body whilst on the machine and remain fully-clothed throughout.
Typically not. Some patients may experience a temporary soreness after treatment; a sign that muscles have been worked in a new way. Cold therapy at the end of treatment sessions reduces any discomfort of this kind.
Yes, although patients are advised not to travel for more than half an hour afterwards as any more than this could be counterproductive to the therapeutic effects of the treatment.
Patients are fully assessed before embarking on a course of IDD Therapy; this assessment includes a review of a current or recent MRI or suitable scan. IDD treatment is gentle and safe and delivered by the Accu SPINA machine. Sessions begin with some Thermedic infrared heat therapy on the lower back to ‘warm up’ the muscles and ligaments. Patients wear ergonomic harnesses which are connected to the pelvis and upper back. The machine tilts so that patients can get onto the treatment bed without added pain or difficulty. Once the patient is comfortably harnessed, a series of computer-controlled pulling forces are gradually applied at precise angles to gently distract the vertebrae surrounding a targeted disc. Patients remain completely relaxed during the 25 minute session on the SPINA machine. At the end of the session some cold therapy is applied to minimize any temporary soreness which may be caused by muscles being worked in a new way. Gentle exercise and activity are gradually introduced as treatment progresses as this is very important for long-term pain relief.
  • Current treatment is not working
  • Want to stop taking painkillers
  • Seeking long-term pain relief
  • Want to return to normal daily activities
Patients usually have a series of treatments spread over a number of weeks. As all conditions are different, some patients may feel a symptomatic improvement after a few sessions but for most, the long-lasting therapeutic changes are progressive and take a number of weeks to achieve.
Patients who have had surgery can have treatment provided that the procedure was not within the previous six months (to allow for complete healing) and there are no surgical implants.
Yes. The goal of the IDD Therapy treatment programme is to improve mobility, relieve pain and create a platform for normal daily activity. As treatment progresses you will be given gentle exercises to perform and shown how to look after your back properly. Exercise and activity are an important part of long-term rehabilitation
Typical candidates for IDD Therapy are people who have had back pain or neck pain for three months and have not responded to manual therapy and exercise.
